Targeting Facebook Updates

Targeting Facebook Updates

I was just on the PADI Facebook page and noticed that lately they are sending out quite a few updates in different languages. While I understand why PADI as an internatiaonal organization is doing this, it's not having the desired effect.

Here's an example of PADI Promoting a ScubaPro Days Event where they will be participating. The update is in Dutch but was sent to all of their 203,701 Fans. An impressive number but I don't think that all 200,000+ of them read Dutch, and some of their fans are making that point known. Note the one poster who said welcome to my block meaning they will no longer receive updates from PADI.

Target Facebook Fans by Location and or Language

PADI Status Update

PADI can easily fix this by targeting their updates to only certain languages or geographic locations. How do you do it? Easy...

When on your facebook page click Use Facebook as Your Page Name.

When composing your update, you'll see a new option that looks like a padlock and says everyone. Click that to change your options.

Customize FB Updates

From There, you can start targeting specific segments of your Fanbase.

Customize FB Updates

First I selected by country, then by state. Notice that you can also drill down all the way to city in certain areas of the wold.

I then took this a setp further and limited this to only fans who speak spanish.

Use this for your Dive Center

You can use this technique for your dive center as well and provide your fans with a much more customized experience. If I'm a fan of a dive center in an area where I don't live, then a local dive coming up this week may not be of much interest to me. So by choosing to not send me this update you're providing me your fan with only relevant information. Increasing the likelyhood that when you do send me something relevant that I'll interact with your page.

You can also use this method on photos and videos in case you want to target them to a specific audience as well. Good Luck and remember, your wall is a place to interact with your divers, not just sell to them!
